PAINT my house, don't PAINT my house!!

Boy, I've had this idea rattling around in my brain for years, and finally it got out. I printed this one out a big glossy sheet of 9"x18" paper and it looks pretty cool...my mom's got it hanging in her beauty shop as sort of a promotional deal. So rock!

The "Caption This Picture" contest is still going, so don't miss your chance to win a George bumper sticker!

She likes me! She really likes me!

Or maybe not. But in any case, Greg and Rob finally get to exchange words with Colleen at night's end. Well...I guess they didn't really exchange any words, but they're ga-ga over her none-the-less. Poor souls!

I can't edit the main page using FrontPage anymore. I dunno why. I reinstalled the FrontPage extensions on my server but it's still giving me the hassle saying they're not installed. Guess it's time to put in a call to ol' tech support.

New blog worthy of mentioning

Our Life on the Funny Pages - Thus far a very funny blog started up by Big Al, whose main blog I read frequently. I love blogs dealing with comic strips!

Contest winner!

Well, the main website is experiencing some technical problems which is why I held out on announcing the Caption This Picture contest winner, but in any case, in an extremely close race between he and Planet Moron, ScooterKSU slides a stick into Planet Moron's spokes and watches him eat dirt (probably voluntarily). So he wins the tile coaster. I might send Planet Moron a magnet or something to stick on the Planet Moron break-room fridge.

Big round of thanks to all who participated--keep it up!

BLAM -- The sound of Emeril exploding

Monday comic up just a wee bit early...While Greg and Rob try to get a closer look at Colleen, Dave shows just what he does in George's spare bedroom all day--invent dumb and useless stuff. In an old strip I did in high school, Dave invented a gasoline-powered wallet, which was met with a less-than-enthusiastic response from George...not being one to repeat myself (in this particular strip, anyway), I went with a gasoline/electric hybrid can opener. Oh, the craziness!

The winner of the caption contest will be announced tomorrow, and a new picture for captioning will go up as well. Thanks to everyone who participated this week!!

Dang ol' bright laptop screen

Well, if you didn't venture over to the Downloads page to check her out yet, there she is, Colleen! She's the newest character to grace the strip. This has ended up being one of my favorite comics, not only in the joke, but in the way the last panel looks...I had originally thought of just having Amanda shouting out the door in the same setting as the first two panels, but it's much livelier to have Greg and Rob out behind the bushes with their laptop screen glowing. It was fun trying to create the glow you see; the last panel actually was colored as usual in Photoshop, but has a translucent black layer over it. I cut out the areas I wanted to appear as glowing and softened their edges so the original color would show through. This makes it appear as these areas are glowing because they're much lighter than the darkened areas around them--the original file looks really cool. The effect is a little lost in this tiny comic, but I think it still came out pretty good!

Don't forget, this week's Caption This Picture contest is still going! It's not going very strong, though. Not too many entries...if at least a couple more people don't enter, I think I'm going to have to run it into next week, too. So come on, get in their with your best captions! It can't hurt to just enter!

April 20, 2005

She's into computers, you say?

New Wednesday comic up. And Friday there'll be a new character added to the strip! Keep your eyes open...because, you know, if they're closed you can't see her.

If you can't wait that long, I've updated the wallpaper in the Downloads section to include the newest character to the strip, as well as adding a 1600x1200 version for you hardcore screen-res geeks out there.

As always, the Caption This Picture contest is ongoing, and the prize is a handsome George tile coaster. These things are worth six bucks plus shipping and they're really cool--all it takes is a funny picture caption to win one! Good luck!

New comic up; contest winner announced

Hey everybody, a new comic is up. One for all you nerds out there (myself included).

Congratulations to last week's "Caption This Picture" contest winner, ThePaul! Thanks to everyone who participated, and here's hoping you'll be back again this week! The prize will be a handsome George tile coaster, so hop, step, and/or jump to it!

Tax day is upon us!

Here's hoping you're more like Greg, Rob, or even George than Dave. Personally, I did mine on the internet a couple months back. And yes, I already blew my refund.

April 13, 2005

So Greg told me to write this post.

He told me, "Hey man, you get quite a few visitors to your blog, right? Can you link to my blog? I'm willing to pay you!" Well, unfortunately no one in the real world accepts cartoon dollars, so I told him to keep his money and buy a new sound card with it or something, but that I'd still link to his blog. So check it out, I hear he wants people to e-mail him stuff so he can respond to them on his blog. I don't know why; he must have a lot of free time.

Also, don't forget this week's Caption This Picture contest!

Hey, look at that, a Sunday-style comic.

It just hit me that I didn't write anything about the latest comic. It's the first Sunday-style comic I've done for the current site. I've got a few old ones hiding in my art portfolio, so maybe I'll re-make some of those. Anyway, I had the idea for this strip many, many years ago and have actually drawn it at least three times. The first time I was probably in seventh grade, the second time I was probably a junior in high school, and it's taken me another six years to finally draw it again. But this is it! This is the best one. Hope you like it.

We have a winner!

I'm proud to announce that Planet Moron has won the first weekly "Caption This Picture" contest! A great big round of thanks to ALL who participated, and here's hoping you come back for more in this week's contest.

First weekly contest coming to an end!

I'm happy to say that, seemingly overnight, we got a few more contest entries, so it looks like I won't have to extend this week's contest into next week after all. That means that if you want a chance to win a George bumper sticker, you've got to submit your caption by 11:59 p.m. tomorrow night! A winner will be decided on Monday morning and a new picture will kick off the next week's contest. The prize for next week will either be a bumper sticker or a handsome tile coaster. Eventually I'll start giving away t-shirts as prizes, but I wanna see this contest get really competitive first!

They won a game!

And thus the (current) softball storyline comes to an end with today's strip. But don't fear, community softball fans (all four of you!), I'm sure there are lots more softball games in George's future.

I've got my syndicate pack all ready to go. 24 black and white comics, a color cover, title page and character introduction page, all bound and good-looking. I was thinking about it though, and wondering if syndicates want the comics loose-leaf. I think it looks so much better bound, so unless I found out otherwise in the next couple of days that's the way I'm sending it.

The "Caption this Picture" contest is still limping along but thus far there is only ONE entrant. I received a batch of five bumper stickers from my CafePress Store and they look fantastic. This is your chance to win one for free, all it takes is a funny caption!

I also want to mention SoVeryPosh.com since the owner was so nice as to link to my blog. It's a cool blog with lots of blog-worthy information.

Bean me, baby

New Wednesday comic is up! This is the first comic I drew in Flash. I also drew Monday's comic in Flash, but I actually drew this one first. Flash is a great program in that it's vector-based, meaning it only stores information about lines and color, unlike a raster-based program like Photoshop, which stores information about every pixel in an image. While that's great for photographs, it's not optimal for comic strips, which ARE just lines and color. So using a vector-based program like Flash to draw the comics allows me to then make the original drawing any size I want, no matter how large, without losing any quality. The talk bubbles and words, however, are added later in Photoshop when I've got the comic the size I want it to be, which is usually around 3800 pixels wide.

I'm also converting my archive of back comics to black and white in hopes of getting a promo pack together to send to a syndicate. I don't want to mail them color copies because those take way too long to print and are more expensive to do so. So here's hoping I'm one of the, like, one percent of total comics that are accepted by syndicates each year!

New comic up, and lots of news

Hey everyone, the new Monday comic is up (a little early...but it's Monday in New York I guess), and there are a number of news items about George...

1) The main site has been renovated. The upper navigation buttons have been nixed in favor of the larger buttons on the bottom featuring the faces of various characters on them. Also, a "Fun Stuff" page has been added with links to the George Forum, the Contests Page, and the Downloads Page.

2) The new "Caption This Picture!" contest is underway. This week's prize will be a George bumper sticker. You can't winnit if you ain't innit!

3) I've started up a new forum for talking about comic strips, which can be found at Comic-Strips.net. It's brand new, and aside from ThePaul, doesn't have any members...and I want to change that! If you love comic strips please go there and register and maybe we can form a community of comic strip lovers and hopefully make it a good place to pass a few, uh, hours, at work.

4) The George Store is now bigger and better than ever. There are lots of new t-shirts and other items to order. I recently ordered a shirt to see how the quality was, and it was fantastic. The printing couldn't be any sharper.

5) There is no 5.

There you have it! And what's the deal with the tumbleweeds rolling through here? Let's get some comments pumping through here! Let me know any questions, comments, ideas, suggestions, inuiries, asides, or allusions you may have regarding George Comics.

150% more George for you to contend with!

Well, I've decided that beginning this Monday, April 4, George is going to come out three times a week instead of two. It will now be updated on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. It may not sound like much, but when you bear in mind that it's a 150% increase over what it was previously, it does make me sweat a little. But eventually I would really like to do George for a living, so I better get in shape now!

Also, Monday will kick off the new "Caption This Picture!" contest.
